Course

The Race to Alaska covers 750 nautical miles of open water, tight passages, and beautiful wooded and mountainous scenery.  The race starts on June 9, 2024 in Port Townsend, Washington with

a 40 nautical mile qualifying sprint to Victoria, British Columbia where we will clear customs and begin the 710 nautical mile second leg to Ketchikan, Alaska on June 12, 2024.  There are two gates that we must pass through, Seymour Narrows and Bella Bella,  effectively routing the race course through the inside passage that meanders through Canadian waters.

Rules

There aren't many. No motors. No support. And a few other technicalities. It is on us to make it to Alaska safely. The race organizers advise avoiding the grizzly bears. First place gets $10,000 and second gets a set of steak knives, everyone else to finish gets the glory of finishing one of the most challenging race courses that exists.
